Notes From The Journey

Tuesday, 15 April, 2003

Mini-skirted Frenchwomen in Nantes have been protesting against a
proposed law which would make "passively soliciting in public" a
crime punishable by two months in prison and a 3,750 euro (GBP2,580)
fine, reports AFP. Pursued by a gaggle of reporters and
photographers, the demonstrators unrolled a pink ribbon and briefly
blocked traffic in front of the city hall. The law - dubbed the "loi
de Sarkozy" after France's interior minister - would, they said, pave
the way for police officers to lock up women whom they deemed
unsuitably dressed.
